Great Leadership and How to Thrive in Adversity

Leadership VXI

Leadership is the single most important aspect that allows an organization to grow and evolve. An effective leader is an informed leader, has strong values that guide their decisions, has integrity, and is creative in coming up with ideas on how to solve complex business dilemmas. Overcoming adversity with leadership might be the single most important skill a leader must-have.

Adversity is a part of any business process outsourcing venture. There was never a perfect enterprise because it simply does not exist. There might be something incredibly wrong if your business did not have hurdles to go over. During difficult times in any setting especially when there’s a team involved, a leader steps up to pull everyone’s morale together, come up with the best solutions to problems, and inspire everyone to do their part. According to VXI Global Solutions Country Manager for the Philippines Eppie Titong, a great leader must know how to LEAD: there are four proactive choices that a great leader makes when adversity strikes.

 L – Listen

Interspersing Yoda’s wisdom into it, subordinates may fear an authoritarian leader into submission but their hatred for him may lead to team confusion and poor efficiency. Being able to listen to your team is an essential trait of a leader–it helps you ask the question: how am I responding to the situation? Listening allows you to understand what your frontline is going through and helps you understand the situation better through their eyes. Listening intently helps you understand your business better and increases your leadership skills by showing your subordinates that you care.

E – Establish Accountability

Accountability occurs when leaders are willing to answer for the outcomes of the choices and actions that they made. Accountability means leaders deliver on their commitment and show the team that they can be trusted to take responsibility for whatever the consequences may come. Integrity is the foundation of accountability, and being able to share information and knowledge that will help your subordinates know how to respond in the situation at hand. Accountable leaders know how to say “sorry” when something goes wrong, and they know how to seek help when they know they need it. Being accountable also allows you to ask yourself about what things you and your team can do to help manage the situation better, no matter how small.

A – Analyze Evidence

One way for a great leader to make a life-altering decision is through evidence-based decision-making. Making critical decisions in the heat of adversity is one of the critical skills that a leader must possess. Sometimes, leaders make decisions based on ‘gut feeling’ and intuition. On the other hand, some leaders make algorithmic and analytical decisions based on data. The latter is our preferred method in this case, especially when making a choice that may drastically alter the course of a business. It is important to gather all the necessary information about the problem at hand and ask: Is this thought based on a fact, or an assumption? Remember Sherlock Holmes’ adage: When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. Analyzing the evidence carefully also firmly establishes integrity and accountability. Whatever the consequences of your choices are, you will know that you made the best decision based on facts.

D – Do Something

As soon as the problem had been identified, planning comes next. Make a list of actions that you intend to take to resolve the issue. Carefully map out the results of each decision and make a list of actions that your business will have to take afterward. Set your priorities. After that, it’s time to take action. Actionable leadership requires communicating with clarity, consistent support of their teams, and always expecting change. At the end of the day, there are no results without anyone taking action.
